WhatDoUC (what-do-you-see) is an annotation tool for image data designed specifically for mobile devices with touch interface only. It has been developed by University of Aalen and can also be used by other institutions. The tool consists of a web application for managing the annotation projects and the mobile application for the actual annotation tasks.

The main purpose of WhatDoUC is to distribute the image annotation task over a large number of users through simple mobile devices like smartphones. Currently only a single type of annotation for image classification is supported, but it is under constant development for additional features.

The application is based on client-server architecture. The server side consists of an application server and a REST API interface. It doesn’t have any user interface. The components are highly decoupled and can be distributed over different platforms and scaled individually. On the client-side there are two different components. The web application provides a user interface for managing the projects, i.e. defining the annotation tasks and image sets. It is targeted at administrators only. Second component on the client-side is the actual mobile application for end users to submit the annotations.
